‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to goals with the Basque club
Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in the UK, an teenage playing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he netted. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he did it once more. When he returned to the city to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the Athletic striker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. This is proving a difficult season for Athletic, partially owing to the demands of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in European competition. However, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by United, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the first title in a long wait. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he admits.
Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. As the child of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you go through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
